Submitted:  February, 21 2026

Nelson’s Cheyenne Levesque has been chosen for the Goi Youth Peace Ambassadors program. (Submitted)  Cheyenne Levesque of Nelson has been accepted as one of 50 participants from a field of 1,500 applicants around the world to become a Goi Youth Peace Ambassador. After the five-month program, she could be selected to go to Tokyo to present at the Goi Peace Foundation’s annual meeting.  Levesque, 17, is a leader of the Indigenous Wild Rose Dance group and president of the L.V. Rogers High School Rotary Interact Club. The club was instrumental in the selection of the 12 languages inscribed in a wooden peace pole at Lakeside Park.  Masahisa Goi started the Peace Pole movement in 1955. Now there are nearly 300,000 Peace Poles in over 200 countries.

The Nelson Peace Pole was dedicated Sept. 21, 2025, with more than 100 people in unison saying, “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in all 12 languages: Sn-səlxcin (Sinixt), Mechif (Metis), English, French, Japanese, Russian, Tagalog, Cantonese, Ukrainian, Hindi, Urdu, and Italian.

On Canadian Indigenous Peoples Day, June 21, 2026,  Rotary will dedicate a plaque recognizing the business sponsors of the Peace Pole, including Spearhead, many Rotary Clubs and how these 12 languages represent Nelson’s diverse heritage.  For more information, contact Tom Schneider, member of the Rotary Action Group for Peace, toms12@gmail.com or 541-729-1263.
