Sladkus began by placing in the center of Duffy Square at 46th Street a Peace Pole that had been decorated by international students at the UN observance of the International Day of Peace on Wednesday, September 18th with “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in many of the world’s languages. He then invited people – including tourists from around the world who were passing by – to each take a flag of one of the world’s nations and stand along the outlined peace sign to await the Minute of Silence at 12 noon.

At the stroke of noon, about 100 people raised the flags in silence for one minute – quite a unique event in itself for the heart of New York City. Following the silence, everyone said, “May Peace Prevail on Earth” three times, waving the flags. Then the Peace Party began, as all sang along with a series of uplifting songs from Frank Sinatra singing “High Hopes” to John Lennon’s “Imagine” to “Tomorrow” from the show, “Annie.”
