Primary school of Komensky Plants Peace Pole for IDP in Michalovce, Slovakia

International Day of Peace – September 21

September 21 is recognized worldwide as the International Day of Peace – a day that emphasizes the importance of harmony, mutual understanding, and respect among people. Our school commemorated this significant occasion through a collective activity involving all students and teachers.

Symbolism of White

The day was marked by the symbolic color white, representing peace and unity. Students arrived at school dressed in white, thereby expressing their support for the values of peace, solidarity, and togetherness.

The Tree of Peace

The central activity of the day was the joint creation of the Tree of Peace, serving as a symbol of unity within our school community. Each class prepared one leaf and attached it to the tree’s branches. On the leaves, students expressed their wishes for a peaceful world, reflections on harmonious coexistence, or personal messages filled with kindness and hope.

The Peace Pole

On this occasion, we also installed a Peace Pole and planted a Peace Tree – both of which stand as lasting symbols of peace, understanding, and unity among people.

A special contribution was made by student Alex Rosinský (Grade IX.A), who participated in the international competition 8th Annual Peace Pals International Art Exhibition and Awards 2025 (to be announced on November 22, 2025, during the Global Peace Pole Day ceremony). Through his project on the theme FREEDOM, he highlighted the significance of peace and the value of living in freedom – something we often take for granted. His work serves as a reminder that peace enables growth, education, and coexistence, and that each individual can contribute to building a more peaceful world.

A Lasting Message

The symbols introduced at our school will continually remind us that peace begins within each of us. Peace, freedom, and understanding are values that must be cultivated every day, forming the foundation of a safe and welcoming world.

We extend our sincere thanks to all students and teachers who actively participated in these activities and helped make this day truly exceptional. We believe that the spirit of peace will continue to inspire and guide us not only on this day but throughout the entire year.

“Peace does not begin in the world – it begins in the heart of each of us.”
