Celebrating 60 Years of Interact at Yeronga State High School, Australia.

On Friday, 28 August, we celebrated 60 years of Interact at Yeronga State High School with a very special anniversary celebration and the dedication of our new Peace Pole.
Yeronga State High School is incredibly proud to celebrate 60 years of Interact, marking a remarkable and enduring partnership between our school, Rotary and our students. Established at Yeronga in 1966, Interact has been an important part of our school community for six decades. Yeronga is proud to have the second-oldest Interact Club in Australia, making this milestone particularly significant. Across six decades, generations of Yeronga students have embraced the values of service, leadership and community through their involvement in Interact. The connection between Yeronga, Rotary and Interact has become an important part of our school’s history and identity.
Our school values of Quality, Harmony and Sustainability are strongly reflected in the work of Interact, providing students with opportunities to develop leadership, contribute to their community and understand the difference they can make beyond themselves. As we celebrate this important milestone, we recognise the many students and staff who have contributed to the Interact legacy over the past 60 years. Their commitment has helped build a strong culture of service and community that continues at Yeronga today.
This celebration also provided an opportunity to unveil our new Peace Pole, a symbol of harmony, peace and our culturally diverse school community. With almost 70 languages spoken at Yeronga, the Peace Pole recognises the diversity of our students and families and reflects our commitment to building understanding and connection.
The Peace Pole carries the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in languages of our diverse school community. During the ceremony, students and staff shared the message in Yagara, English, Dari, Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Somali, Swahili, Spanish and Auslan. Hearing the same message expressed in so many different languages was a powerful reminder that although our cultures and languages may be diverse, our hope for peace is something we share.
The ceremony concluded with a minute of reflection, inviting everyone to consider those affected by conflict around the world and, importantly, what each of us can do to bring greater peace, kindness and understanding into our own lives, homes, school and community.
It was a wonderful celebration of service, leadership, diversity, inclusion and community, bringing together current students, staff, past Interact members, Rotary representatives and community guests. We are incredibly proud of our lasting relationship with Rotary and Interact and grateful for the opportunities and support they continue to provide our students. We look forward to building on this remarkable partnership for many years to come.
The Peace Pole will now stand as a lasting reminder to future generations of Yeronga students: May Peace Prevail on Earth.
