Following is the article I prepared for our Mapleton Park Community Garden Peace (CPG) in Moncton, New Brunswick to honor Jennifer Johnston and our new Peace Pole addition.
The Mapleton Park Community Peace Garden is now home to a beautiful Peace Pole. More than a new addition to our community, it is a lasting symbol of love, hope, and the incredible legacy of Jennifer (Jen) Johnston.
The message on this Peace Pole is simple: “May Peace Prevail on Earth”
A message that speaks to the world, but also to our own homes, our families, our friendships, and our community.
For Will and Jen Johnston, the dream of having a Peace Pole was something they carried together. When the opportunity came to contribute to the Community Peace Garden, Will knew it was the right moment to bring that dream to life — creating a place where Jen’s values could continue to inspire others for generations to come.
Jen was a peacemaker.
She believed in respect, empathy, kindness, and caring for others. She dedicated 30 years of her life to serving with the RCMP, retiring as a Sergeant in 2019. She was also an active member of the Greater Moncton Sunrise Rotary Club, where she continued her commitment to making her community a better place.
After living with cancer for 20 years, Jennifer passed away on September 4, 2025, at the age of 57. While her family, friends, and community deeply feel the loss of her presence, her spirit continues through the many lives she touched.
This Peace Pole is a reflection of Jennifer — a place where people can gather, reflect, and be reminded that every act of kindness, no matter how small, has the power to create positive change.
Will shared these words:
“Jen was always the peacemaker. She leaves a legacy of respect, empathy, love, and peace.
We are all aware of the need for peace around the world and between nations and peoples. That challenge can seem overwhelming, but we can all contribute to peace on a smaller scale — within Canada, within our community, and within our own homes.
May this Peace Pole remind us of these achievable goals and inspire us to work toward them every day. May Jen’s spirit and love live on through its important symbolism.”
The Peace Pole installation includes the Unity/Rainbow flag and messages of peace and unity in eight languages, reflecting the diversity of our community and reminding us that although our languages, cultures, and backgrounds may differ, our hopes for kindness, understanding, and peace are shared.

🌿 About Mapleton Park
Mapleton Park welcomes visitors with trails extending from Gorge Road to Mapleton Road. The park encompasses 122 hectares of forest, wetlands, open spaces, and the north branch of Hall’s Creek. Interpretive signs throughout the park highlight its rich ecosystem, including local bird species and native vegetation.
During the winter, some trails are groomed and sanded for walking, while others are reserved for snowshoeing. The Community Peace Garden, located beside the Rotary Pavilion at 600 Mapleton Road, is a favourite gathering place for community groups, corporate events, and special occasions. During the winter months, it also offers outdoor skating.
We invite everyone to visit, reflect, and help keep the message of peace alive in our community.
