Peace Pole at Warwick memorial garden at Winslow Riding Center, Warwick, NY, USA

August 7, 2025

The Warwick Valley Rotary Club continued its decades-long support of Winslow Therapeutic Riding Center this summer with construction of a memorial garden honoring Leo Kaytes, Jini Mazza and Lou Marquet for their years of volunteer services to Winslow.

Mazza was co-founder of Winslow and executive director when it was housed in a trailer on Borderland Farms. As chairman of the Winslow Board of Directors, Kaytes spearheaded much of the growth of the non-profit organization during the past 35 years. Marquet, who developed the upscale Warwick Grove senior housing community, volunteered his services during the ongoing development of Winslow’s Mt. Peter facility.

The garden is located mid-way between the Administration/ Indoor Riding Arena Building and the recently constructed multi-purpose learning center. Winslow Executive Director Susan Ferro thanked the Rotarians for their many years of support to Winslow, adding “the memorial garden is a fitting tribute to Leo, Jini and Lou. Their unselfish devotion to our program has allowed us to serve thousands of grateful and deserving clients.”

As its 2025 Rotary Service Project, the 75-member Warwick Valley Rotary Club designed and built the garden, which includes a Peace Pole with signage in eight languages, three memorial benches, flowers and landscaping. Surveyor John McGloin, a 33-year Rotarian, chaired the project.

Additional Rotary Service Projects include exterior painting of the Warwick Historical Society’s United African Methodist Episcopal Church on Forester Avenue and painting pavilions at the Town of Warwick’s Mountain Lake Park.
