The Peace Pole initiative – 2016 to present – SHERWOOD OREGON, USA

Rotary Club of Sherwood Oregon, USA, initiated its Peace Pole project in 2016 to raise awareness in the community of the need to promote world peace and understanding. The Peace Poles are 6 feet high, 4-sided, and display the words “May Peace Prevail On Earth” in English plus 3 other languages. The Rotary International Wheel logo and a dedication plaque displays the host organization name and the Rotary Club of Sherwood. Our first Sherwood Rotary Peace Pole was planted in 2016 at the Sherwood YMCA. The Pole Dedication was celebrated with a performance by the Portland Peace Choir and a Peace Walk from the YMCA to the Sherwood Center for the Arts. We also were privileged to have Alter Weiner, a holocaust survivor, speak to about 300 guests at the Center for the Arts.

To date, Sherwood Oregon Peace Poles have been erected at 32 locations including Schools, Faith Based Organizations, City of Sherwood properties and businesses in Sherwood. We have sponsored Peace Poles in the surrounding cities of Oregon City, Tigard, Hillsboro and Beaverton. Our Peace Pole program was extended to LaPlata, Colombia and we inspired a Peace Pole near Kaslo, British Columbia, Canada. Members of the community are encouraged to view the Peace Poles at the locations listed at communities around the area and worldwide. Join us to participate in a series of peace-related educational events and activities being offered in Sherwood over the coming months.
