At the August Van Landeghem Square in Willebroek, a new Peace Pole has been placed. The wooden Peace Pole was given a spot next to the benches at the elementary school ‘Pleintje’ and carries a clear message of peace, respect, peace, and connectedness.

The Peace Pole contains a peace message in eight languages: Dutch, French, English, Spanish, Arabic, Turkish, and Japanese. “The Peace Pole emphasizes that peace is a universal value that connects people all over the world,” says alderman Marc De Laet. “The Peace Pole on the school square is a place that is seen daily by children, parents, neighbors, and passersby.”
The new Peace Pole is part of the international Peace Pole Project, which spreads symbols of peace worldwide with the message ‘May Peace Prevail On Earth.” Every year, a Peace Pole is placed somewhere in Willebroek, on the initiative of the Humanistic Association. This new Peace Pole makes the message once again visible in public space.
“A Peace Pole is a simple object, but the message is timeless,” says De Laet. “It is very significant that Willebroek gives the peace message a clear place in this street, and a spot where so many people gather daily.”
