“May Peace Prevail On Earth” is now inscribed in the schoolyard of the Albert Schweitzer/Geschwister Scholl Gymnasium (ASGSG) in Marl. It appears in eight languages on a white wooden Peace Pole, which was ceremonially unveiled on Monday (September 22). The so-called “Peace Pole” is a silent reminder, a symbol against violence and war.

Already the fifth Peace Pole in Marl, Germany

In the presence of the entire student body as well as representatives from politics and administration, Mayor Werner Arndt also said: “This is already the fifth Peace Pole in Marl. But the first at a school.” He further emphasized the significance of the memorial: “Tolerance and cooperation are highly valued in our city. Peace is undoubtedly one of the most precious assets we have in our world. It is the foundation for harmonious coexistence, for prosperity, and for the happiness of every individual. Peace means not only the absence of war, but also the morality of the entire society.” In the languages taught at the school.

Besides the Peace Pole at the ASGSG (Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium Marl), there are four others in Marl: in front of the gates of the chemical park, in the park of the Paracelsus Clinic, at the main branch of the Insel-VHS (adult education center), and in front of the town hall. They originate from a Project of the organization May Peace Prevail On Earth International, a UN non-governmental organization founded in Japan in 1955. Each Peace Pole bears the message “May Peace Prevail On Earth” in eight different languages. The ASGSG chose the languages taught at the school: German, Latin, English, French, Spanish, Russian, Hebrew, and Arabic.
